A Farcaster Vibe-Coding Challenge - Season 1 - June Prep / July Submissions / August Finals

ZABAL GAMES

Three months. June is prep - ZAO teachers + Vibe Coding instructors run recorded sessions on tools, context, and the ecosystem. July is the open build-a-thon - anyone with a vibe-coding harness ships a build for the ZAO ecosystem publicly. August is the Finals - a cohort curated from July, each builder paired with a ZAO mentor for the main event + winner reveal.

Use whatever harness you want (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Aider, Bolt, v0, Lovable). ZAO mentors pick their champions from July ships - the mentor roster is open and recruiting now. All chosen builders win. You bring the build, we bring the team + distribution.

The Three Months

June Prep - July Submissions - August Finals

Three months instead of one. Born from the working session with Jordan (Empire Builder) - the original "all-in-June" plan compressed too much. The new shape gives builders a month to absorb context, a month to ship, and a month for the Finals to breathe.

June - Prep Month

ZAO Teachers + Vibe Coding Instructors

Recorded sessions, Far-Hack style. ZAO teachers cover governance, Respect, ZOLs, fractals. Vibe coding instructors walk through Claude Code, Cursor, MCP, and agent harnesses. Tool specialists drop tutorials on Empire Builder V3 (with Jordan), zlank.online, POIDH bounties, Juke, and Songjam. Watch live or after. The ZABAL/ZAO/WaveWarZ context skill goes live so any agent can load full ecosystem context with one drop.

July - Submissions Month

Open Build-a-Thon Ships

Anyone with the chops ships a build aligned with ZABAL, ZAO, or WaveWarZ. Live URL + open-source GitHub repo + 60-second demo + cast on /zabal. Builders can open a tokenless Empire on Empire Builder as a public build home (leaderboard + treasury surface) - encouraged, not required. Mentors watch rolling and claim champions as builds drop - first-come-first-served per mentor.

August - The Finals

The Finals + Winner Reveal

The mentor-champion pairs lock. Same Finals prompt for the whole cohort. 24h build with mentor embedded as teammate + 24h promote + 24h ZAO governance vote + live reveal stream. Finalists who want to launch a token Ascend their Empire via Clanker + airdrop with vesting to their contribution leaderboard. Those who do not keep running the tokenless Empire indefinitely.

The application is the build (July). The Finals (August) are a collaboration among the cohort. All chosen finalists get paid + the participation collectible + earn Respect in ZAO governance during the event.

What This Actually Is

The Why

ZABAL Games is not a generic hackathon. It is a Farcaster-creator onboarding event for the ZAO ecosystem - a structured way to bring hungry, Farcaster-active vibe-coders into ZAO by having them build something real, in public, with a ZAO mentor in their corner.

The core thesis

Bring talented Farcaster builders together. Give them deep context on everything ZAO is building (ZAO OS, WaveWarZ, ZAO Festivals, and the rest). Let them create something that helps the community, with a ZAO mentor as their embedded teammate. Earn governance in the community during the event itself. If they want to keep building with ZAO after - great. If not, they still walked away with a real artifact, a real relationship, and a real onchain credential.

What success looks like

New builders who understand ZAO from the inside. Real artifacts shipped for the ecosystem. A recurring format (this is Season 1) that compounds. The competition is in getting selected through Phase 1 - once you are a Finalist, the Finals are a collaboration, and all finalists win.

Focused on the creator, not the thing they create

The builds matter, but the people matter more. This is about who you are as a builder, how you work in public, how you collaborate with a mentor - not just whether the demo is polished. That is why the application is itself a build (Phase 1): we want to see how you actually ship.

Context You Will Build For

The ZAO Ecosystem

ZABAL Games is run by ZAO - music infrastructure for independent artists using decentralized tools. When you build for the Games, you build for this ecosystem. Here is the map.

The Umbrella

The ZAO

A Farcaster-native music + creator community. Mission: bring the profit margin, the data, and the IP rights back to independent artists. Built on Farcaster + Base. Members hold ZABAL, earn Respect, govern through fractals.

The Platform

ZAO OS

The gated Farcaster client - feed, audio + video spaces, Respect leaderboard, governance, ecosystem integrations. Next.js + Supabase + Neynar.

The Token

$ZABAL + Empire Builder

ZABAL is the ecosystem token on Base, wrapped in an Empire on Empire Builder - leaderboards, boosters, treasury. Launched via Clanker.

Prediction Markets

WaveWarZ

Solana-based artist prediction markets. Artists battle head-to-head, wallets bet on outcomes. 40+ artists with real W/L records and SOL volume.

Festivals

ZAO Festivals + ZAOstock

ZAO's IRL festival arm. ZAOstock is the inaugural festival - a curated, paid, no-pay-to-play indie artist showcase.

The Label

ZAO Music

The label arm - releases tracks via DistroKid + 0xSplits + BMI, splitting royalties onchain without the major-label tax.

Concerts

COC Concertz

Virtual concert community - promoters running streamed shows. Part of the ZAO content + events engine.

Reputation

Respect + Fractals

Respect is ZAO's soulbound, peer-validated reputation - earned in weekly fractal sessions. It is what gives you a vote in ZAO governance, including who wins the Games.

The full context bundle (everything above plus the rails, SDKs, brand guidelines, and research docs) drops to all Finalists as the Phase 2 prompt. Phase 1 builders get a lighter version when the build-a-thon opens.

Why this works

Win-Win-Win

Most challenges are zero-sum. ZABAL Games is built so every party gets something real out of the weekend - the players, the ZAO ecosystem, and the viewers tuning in.

For You (Farcaster Creators)

Distribution + Cash + Portfolio

$35-150 USDC - every finalist who ships gets paid. ZAO accounts boost your stream + casts during the promote window so your audience grows whether you win or not. Open-source GitHub repo as a portfolio piece. 24h of live-coding footage you can repurpose forever. Permanent onchain collectible proving you shipped at Season 1.

For ZAO Ecosystem

8 New Builders + Real Tools

8 ecosystem-aligned builds shipped in 48 hours. Every prompt option ties to existing rails (Empire Builder, Farcaster, Hats, Bonfire, EAS, Coinflow). The Twitch streams feed the ZAO content engine - 30+ hours of live content turns into 150+ short clips. Onchain ZAO governance vote becomes a community engagement event.

For Viewers + Holders

Drama, Tips, Voting Power

24h of live-coding drama across 8 streams - pick a player, switch around, compare approaches. Tip your favorites via Coinflow during the promote window. ZAO members with earned Respect cast onchain votes that actually decide who wins. Governance does real work this weekend.

Join The Team

Mentor or Workshop Lead

Two ways to lend your time to ZABAL Games. Mentors claim a champion from July submissions and embed as their teammate during the August Finals. Workshop leads record one June bootcamp session on their specialty (Empire Builder, Snaps, agents, tokens, music infra, fractal governance - your call).

June Workshop Month

The Calendar - Pick a Slot

Two things on this page: the live calendar of June workshops (RSVP to attend any session), and a slot-picker for new workshop leads (book your June date directly). If neither is wired yet, use the form above or DM @bettercallzaal.

Calendar

What's on this month

Browse the workshops scheduled for June and RSVP to attend. New sessions land as workshop leads lock their slots.

Lu.ma calendar embed - URL drops in once the calendar is live.

Use the form below in the meantime.

Slot Picker

Lead a workshop - book your date

Pick any open day in June and lock your slot. Cast credit, a spot on the team, and your session lives in the workshop library forever.

Cal.com slot picker - link drops in once the event type is set up.

Use the form above in the meantime.

How it works: Lu.ma shows what is scheduled (audience RSVPs). Cal.com lets workshop leads book a slot from open availability. Both feed the same calendar - one place, one view. If you do not have a Lu.ma or Cal.com account, the form above + a Farcaster DM works just as well.

Confirmed Workshop Leads

The Format

The Mechanic - July Build, August Finals

Most hackathons make you apply with a paragraph + a vibe. ZABAL Games makes the application itself the work - prove yourself by shipping, not by selling. June seasons you with context; July is when you ship; the most interesting builds advance to the August Finals, each paired with a ZAO mentor as embedded teammate.

July - Open Build-a-Thon

Anyone Can Apply By Building

Vibe-code something - anything - using the ZAO context from June. Ship it publicly with a live URL, an open-source GitHub repo, a 60-second demo, and a cast on /zabal. Use whatever harness fits you (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Aider, Bolt, v0, Lovable). Open to everyone with the chops to ship. Opening a tokenless Empire on Empire Builder as your public build home is encouraged but not required.

Late July - Curation

Mentors Claim Their Champions

As July builds ship, ZAO mentors watch rolling. Each mentor claims one champion - the builder whose work + style fits their search. First-come-first-served by mentor, so build early + build well. The mentor-champion pairs lock the August Finals roster. The mentor roster is open - we are recruiting mentors now.

August - The Finals

The Main 72h Event + Winner Reveal

Same Finals prompt for the whole cohort. 24h to build with your mentor embedded as teammate (Discord/Meet, live with you). 24h to promote. ZAO members with earned Respect vote onchain. Live reveal stream. Finalists who want to launch a token Ascend their Empire through Clanker with an airdrop + vesting to their leaderboard. All selected finalists win - cash + collectible + Respect earned during the event.

The competition is the July ship (getting selected). The August Finals are a collaboration among the cohort. All chosen finalists get paid + receive the participation collectible + earn Respect in the ZAO governance during the event itself.

August Finals - 72-Hour Timeline

T-3 DAYS
Onboarding Call 90-min call. Rules, infra setup, wallet linkage, voting mechanism walkthrough. Mandatory or forfeit.

T+72h
Live Results Reveal 1-hour stream. Top 3 announced. USDC distributed onchain LIVE via 0xSplits. Participation collectibles minted to all finishers.
Prizes

All Finalists Win

The competition is in getting selected (Phase 1). Once you're in the Finals, you're already a winner - the cohort collaborates, not competes. The $500 USDC pool is tiered to recognize standout work, but every finalist walks home paid + with the participation collectible + Respect earned during the event. The DAO vote orders the recognition, doesn't pick winners-vs-losers.

1st Place
$150
USDC + collectible + Hall of Fame
2nd Place
$100
USDC + collectible + Hall of Fame
3rd Place
$75
USDC + collectible + Hall of Fame
4th through 8th: $35 USDC each + collectible Total pool = $150 + $100 + $75 + (5 x $35) = $500. Hit the submission bar by T+48h and you walk away with cash + a permanent onchain collectible + Hall of Fame entry + audience growth from ZAO amplification.
Who Decides

The ZAO DAO Votes

ZAO members who have earned Respect by contributing through fractals are the judging body. Not whoever holds the most tokens. Not a closed panel. The community that's been showing up + earning peer-validated reputation gets to pick which builds serve the ecosystem best.

How voting works

Eligible voters = ZAO members with Respect above a threshold. Respect is ZAO's soulbound peer-validated reputation - it's earned in weekly fractals over time. So the voter set naturally skews toward long-tenure contributors without needing a separate tenure rule. Voter eligibility is snapshotted at T+0 so the set is locked before the Games start. 1-person-1-vote mechanism for Season 1. Placement by total votes. Reveal stream at T+72h announces placements + distributes USDC + mints collectibles live onchain.

Tooling + Visibility

Use Any Harness - Show Your Work

We don't care if you use Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Aider, Cline, Bolt, v0, Lovable, or hand-roll your own pipeline. What we care about is that you build in public. Pick at least one primary visibility mode below. Mix and match welcome.

Mode 1

Live Twitch Stream

Stream the bulk of your build live on Twitch. The default - what we recommend. ZAO restreams every finalist to a single hub page so viewers can switch between players.

Mode 2

Recorded Screen Sessions

Screen-record your build sessions and upload to YouTube/Loom within 1h of each session ending. Cast the link to /zabal as you go. Less drama than live but easier on shy builders.

Mode 3

Public AI Prompt Logs

Share your AI conversation logs publicly as you go. Cursor + Windsurf composer history, Claude Code transcript dumps, Aider session logs - whatever your tool exports. Post snippets every 1-2 hours.

Mode 4

Frequent Build Casts

Cast progress on Farcaster every 1-2 hours with screenshots, snippets, and what you're prompting. Lower bar than streaming, higher cadence required. Tag /zabal + @bettercallzaal.

The rule: at least one primary visibility mode, plus ongoing /zabal casts Voters need to verify you actually built it in 24h with AI tools - that's the only constraint. How you show your work is up to you. Pick the mode that fits your personality and ship.
Where This Goes

The Bigger Picture

ZABAL Games is Season 1. It is designed to be recurring infrastructure for ZAO, not a one-off event. Here is the longer arc.

Seasons

This Is Season 1

The format repeats. Mentors carry across Seasons. Season 1 alumni become eligible to mentor or compete again. Each Season compounds the builder network + the body of shipped work.

Tokenization

Stream Tied to a Token (Future)

A future layer: players who want it can launch a Clanker token tied to their build + stream. Viewers back builds financially, trade volume becomes a parallel signal next to the DAO vote. Optional, player-driven, not a requirement - but the design space is open.

The Team

Mentors Are On The Team

Being a ZAO Mentor is a real, persistent role - a Hat NFT, a private channel, cast credit, ongoing ZAO ops involvement. The Games are how ZAO grows its core builder + mentor tier over time.

Radical Transparency

What's Locked + What's Still TBD

This is Season 1 and it is being designed in the open. Here is exactly where things stand - what is decided, and what is still being figured out. If you are reading this to decide whether to get involved, you should know both.

Locked

  • Two-phase model - open build-a-thon, then a curated Finals event
  • Open mentor roster - mentors recruited openly, each picks one champion, embedded as teammate
  • Tool-agnostic - any vibe-coding harness
  • Show your work - 4 visibility modes, pick at least one
  • $500 USDC pool - tiered, but every Finalist gets paid + collectible
  • ZAO governance vote - Respect-earning members, 1-person-1-vote, not token-weighted
  • Applications public - by default, on the board below
  • Submission bar - live URL + open-source repo + 60s demo + /zabal cast
  • Mentor picks - first-come-first-served, rolling, as Phase 1 builds ship
  • Season 1 framing - recurring format, not one-off

Still TBD

  • Dates - lock once the cohort + mentor availability are known
  • Phase 1 prompt content - Zaal is writing the full ZAO context bundle
  • Phase 1 duration - how long the open build-a-thon window runs
  • Mentor roster - open and recruiting; per-mentor search styles defined as mentors join
  • Finals size - the finalist count locks after July submissions land
  • Participation collectible spec - likely a Hats Protocol role NFT
  • Governance earned during event - exact Respect amount + when
  • Start time - balancing US-centric with global participation
  • Tokenization layer - opt-in Clanker tokens, design space open, not a Season 1 requirement

Full working spec lives in the ZAO research library (Doc 630 + the canonical-state Doc 701). This page is the shareable summary - the docs are the source of truth + the running log of every decision.

The Context File

One URL. Any Harness.

The July build prompt is a single machine-readable file at zabalgames.com/llms.txt. Point your AI tool at it and load the full ZAO ecosystem context in one fetch - what every brand is, the tech stack and rails, the two build paths, the brand guidelines (no emojis, no em dashes, naming glossary), the submission bar, and where the deeper docs live.

Load it

Point your harness at the URL

Claude Code: save as CLAUDE.md
Cursor: save as .cursorrules
Windsurf: save as .windsurfrules
Aider: --read CONVENTIONS.md
Cline / Continue: drop in .cline/instructions/

One file. Any tool. Treat sections as menu items - if you are building Empire Builder tooling, focus on that section.

Claude skill

For Claude Code users

A packaged Claude skill mirror of the context file - install once, available across all your projects. The skill auto-loads when the agent recognises ZABAL Games / ZAO ecosystem work.

mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/zabal-games
curl -o ~/.claude/skills/zabal-games/SKILL.md \\
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ZAODEVZ/zabalgames/main/.claude/skills/zabal-games/SKILL.md

Two build paths. Adopt a started ZAO project from the list in the context file, or build from scratch. Either way you tie it to real ZAO rails (Empire Builder, Farcaster mini apps, Hats, Bonfire, EAS, Hypersub, Coinflow) and ship within 24h with your AI tool of choice.

The August Finals get an additional sealed prompt drop at T+0 - identical for every finalist so the build window starts on equal footing. The July base context (this file) stays public the whole way through.

Path 1 - Adopt a Project

Started ZAO Projects Up for Grabs

You do not have to build from scratch. These are real, in-progress ZAO projects that need a builder to ship them forward. Adopt one in your July submission - or build from scratch with the context file. Both paths count.

01

Songjam leaderboard migration

Move the Songjam leaderboard off the deprecated X scraper onto an Empire Builder API leaderboard. Frees Adam from scraper maintenance, gives ZABAL Farcaster-native data. Spec: Doc 654.

02

POIDH bounty leaderboard

Empire Builder leaderboard pulling on-chain POIDH bounty submissions. Counts unique submitters across all ZABAL bounties. One contract wired, second pending. Spec: Doc 654 + Player Bundle.

03

zlank Empire daily-stats Snap template

A one-click "Today's Empire Builder Stats" Snap template on zlank.online. Footy app is the reference. kmac.eth + Zaal collab. Spec: Doc 654.

04

Twitch -> Empire Builder stream feed

StreamElements WebSocket events feed an apiLeaderboard. Stream activity becomes a real-time Empire leaderboard. Spec: pull Twitch + StreamElements docs from the player context bundle.

05

A new ZOE skill

Extend the ZOE concierge bot (Telegram @zaoclaw_bot). Backend mirrors the Hermes runtime pattern - Claude Code CLI as subprocess, swap system prompt. Spec: see ZOE / Hermes references in the player bundle.

06

This /zabal mini app

The Farcaster mini app you're on. Extend the workshops calendar, the submissions board, the connector NFT flow. Lives at github.com/ZAODEVZ/zabalgames.

07

COC Concertz content pipeline

Today: record show -> Descript -> newsletter builder generates YouTube descriptions (MiniMax AI) -> manual cross-post. Automate the cross-post end. Bridges to ZAO's `src/lib/publish/` 10-platform module.

08

Streaming auto-clip flywheel

Turn 24h of stream into ~150 short clips for TikTok / Reels / YouTube / Farcaster. The content engine that processes Games streams. Spec referenced in Doc 701.

Want one of these? DM @bettercallzaal with the number. List is curated; status updates as builders claim slots. Full curated list lives in llms.txt.

Submit Your Phase 1 Build

Apply by Shipping

Phase 1 is open to anyone. Build something with the ZAO context prompt (released when applications open) using your vibe-coding harness of choice. Ship publicly. ZAO mentors watch rolling - each claims one champion to bring to the Finals. Build early + build well.

Note: applications are public by default. Your submission is a Farcaster cast - shareable, visible, indexable. If you'd prefer to apply privately, this isn't the right Games for you.

Used for prize payout if you make the Finals. Public on your submission.

Must be reachable. Mentors will click + try it.

A public cast in /zabal channel announcing your build. The cast IS your application visibility.

Building on a starter is just as valid as from scratch. Just credit which one.

Build window will be 48h. Once the cohort is set we'll find dates that work for the group.

Required: at least one primary mode + ongoing /zabal casts throughout.

Doesn't have to be your day job. We care more about whether you ship in public.

Honest answers help us pair you with the right onboarding support.

Show us what you ship. One favorite cast, your stream, a repo, anything.

Don't sell us. Tell us.

Bonus weight if you're already in the ecosystem. Required: nothing - new builders welcome.

Your submission is public. It appears in the gallery below + mentors review it there.

Starting Points

Starter Projects

Don't want to start from a blank repo? These are seeded starting points - fork one, make it yours, ship it as your Phase 1 build. Building on a starter is just as valid as building from scratch. Note which one you extended on your submission.

FAQ

Common Questions

How does the two-phase model actually work? +
Phase 1 is open. Anyone can apply by building something with the ZAO context prompt (released when applications open). Use any vibe-coding harness. Ship publicly with a live URL, GitHub repo, demo video, and a cast on /zabal. As builds ship, ZAO mentors watch rolling - each claims one champion (first-come-first-served per mentor). Phase 2 is the Finals - the mentor-player pairs build for 24h, promote for 24h, and the ZAO DAO votes on builds in a separate 24h window. All finalists win - the competition is in Phase 1 (getting selected), the Finals are a collaboration.
Who is this for? +
Anyone willing to build in public + ship a real artifact for Phase 1. Phase 1 is genuinely open to everyone with the chops to ship. ZAO mentors then pick their champions based on whose Phase 1 builds resonate with each mentor's search style. You don't need to be a senior engineer - vibe-coding harnesses close a lot of skill gaps. You DO need to be willing to show your work in public.
What does ZAO actually do for me as a creator? +
Three things. First, distribution - ZAO accounts (BCZ Farcaster, /zao channel, COC Concertz, ZAO OS) amplify every finalist during the promote window so your audience grows whether you place or not. Second, infrastructure - we set up your Twitch/StreamElements onboarding, give you a pre-funded Privy wallet, and provide an Empire Builder API key. Third, content engine - the streaming flywheel auto-clips your build into shorts for TikTok/Reels/YouTube/Farcaster, so 24h of streaming becomes ~20 pieces of content you can use forever.
Do I have to use Claude Code? +
No. Use whatever vibe-coding harness you want - Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Aider, Cline, Bolt, v0, Lovable, even hand-roll your own pipeline. The constraint is "show your work" not "use this specific tool." Pick one of the 4 visibility modes (live stream, recorded sessions, public prompt logs, or frequent build casts) and ship publicly.
Do I have to stream the entire 24h build? +
Live streaming is just one of four visibility modes. You can instead record screen sessions and upload to YouTube within 1h, share public AI prompt logs, or cast frequent screenshots every 1-2 hours. Pick what fits your personality. Required: at least one primary mode plus ongoing /zabal casts throughout. Voters need to verify you built it in 24h with AI tools - HOW you show your work is up to you.
Can I work as a team? +
Solo only for Season 1. Teams of 2 considered for a future Season. The point is to see what one builder can ship in 24 hours.
Who picks the winners? +
ZAO members who have earned Respect through fractal participation. Respect is ZAO's soulbound, peer-validated reputation - earned in weekly fractal sessions over time. The eligible voter set naturally skews toward long-tenure contributors. Voter set is snapshotted at T+0 so it's locked before the Games begin. 1-person-1-vote mechanism, NOT token-weighted (so a whale holding lots of ZABAL has no extra power - this is governance by earned contribution, not by token holdings). The people deciding are the people who've actually built ZAO and know what's worth building next.
What if my time zone is bad for PT? +
Season 1 is anchored to Pacific Time. We know this disadvantages EU/Asia. A future Season may run regional variants. For Season 1: if you're up for coding through your night, you're up for it. Otherwise wait for the next Season.
Who owns the code I ship? +
You do. Open-source mandate (MIT or similar permissive license) is a submission requirement. ZAO doesn't claim IP. We can fork or extend per the license, but ownership stays with you.
What happens after the games? +
All finalist builds live on as open-source repos in the /zabal Hall of Fame. Some get organically picked up by ZAO ecosystem brands. Some die. Some you keep evolving. No obligation either way - you finished, you got the collectible, you're an alumnus.
Can I read the full spec? +
Yes - Doc 630 in the ZAO research library covers everything: format, prompt design, judging, prize, infra, risks, and strategic considerations. This page is the marketing summary; the doc is the source of truth.
